2018 new fair foods announced

DES MOINES ? The Iowa State Fair is known for fun, interesting and delicious food. Fairgoers can try over 50 new foods at the 2018 Iowa State Fair.

The new foods, with * denoting Best New Food finalists, include:

New this year is the Best New Deal Contest, which recognizes a value food item that is budget-friendly under $4. This year?s contest winner is the Smoked Chicken Leg, a slow-roasted hickory-smoked chicken leg, at Eat It?s Chicken City on the south side of the Susan Knapp Amphitheater for $3.

The 2018 Best New Food finalists are:

? All Iowa Belly Up Burger ? Half pound of fresh ground pork belly seasoned with a signature rub then grilled to perfection, topped with pulled pork, a signature sauce, thick-cut candied bacon and slaw, and served on a brioche bun. The All Iowa Belly Up Burger is at The Rib Shack south of the Bill Riley Stage for $10.

? Apple Eggrolls ? Eggrolls wrapped with apple filling sprinkled with cinnamon sugar that can be dipped in caramel. The Apple Eggrolls are at Applishus Stands under the east canopy of the Varied Industries Building, Cultural Center Courtyard, south side of the walk on Triangle and northwest corner of Walnut Square for $5.

Vote to save a new food and add it to the Top 3 New Foods for 2018. Fair enthusiasts can cast their vote for the third new food via the Iowa State Fair App. Voting closes at 10 a.m. Friday.

The top three new Fair foods will compete for the 2018 Iowa State Fair People?s Choice Best New Food. Fairgoers can sample the top three finalists and cast their vote Aug. 9-14. The winner will be announced Aug. 15 during the Fair.
