American Legion Auxiliary
The American Legion Auxiliary No. 47 held its bimonthly meeting Wednesday at the VFW, with Linda Hendricks, president, opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag and the Auxiliary Preamble.
Shirley Kitch, treasurer, reported having sent the bimonthly donation for veterans needs and $50 to help with a pizza party, both for the VA Hospital in Iowa City.
Darlene Vorhies indicated the poppies have arrived, and the Fairfield American Legion Auxiliary 2018 Poppy Days have been set for May 18-19. Kitch will schedule volunteers to staff tables at First National Bank, Hy-Vee and Walmart, with hours at each location to be determined later, depending on available workers.
Vorhies shared a section of a Dear Abby column giving contact information to get military markers at no cost for deceased military veterans, and an informative article from the Veterans Affairs office in the Van Buren County Register which included information about April and May Honor Flights scheduled.
Special monthly meetings are being held to prepare for hosting of The Wall That Heals in September. Opening ceremonies being planned by a committee made up of Mary Andersen, Roger Frakes, Linda Hendricks, Sam Johnson, Charles Rubey, Kitch and Vorhies. Gene Stine made contacts early to help raise needed funds. Names of all known donors will be printed on a portion of the program. Donations received beyond the required $8,000 to host The Wall That Heals will help fund printing of the program, pay for ads, rental of golf carts, purchase printed T-shirts for committee members, and provide transportation to enable individuals to visit The Wall That Heals who could not otherwise get there.
The next special meeting of The Wall That Heals Committee will be April 11, and next bimonthly meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary will be May 16.
