Arrest made in fatal hit-and-run

DRAKESVILLE ? A man has been arrested for a fatal hit-and-run accident near Drakesville in Davis County.

Terry Petary, 41, of Drakesville, was arrested Monday and charged with felony vehicular homicide in the death of Merlin Beechy, 9.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, Merlin and his 12-year-old brother Nathan were walking westbound on the eastbound side of 180th Street west of Drakesville at about 9:49 p.m. when they were both struck from behind by a vehicle. The driver of the vehicle did not stop.

Merlin was declared dead at the scene, while Nathan was taken by LifeFlight to Mercy Medical Clinic in Des Moines.

The vehicle involved was reported to be a white Dodge pickup. Davis County Sheriff?s deputies located a white Dodge pickup in West Grove (Davis County) that had damage consistent with the evidence found at the scene. As of Monday, Petary was being held in the Davis County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

An arrest is merely an accusation and all suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
