Brighton girl killed by train

MT. PLEASANT ? An 18-year-old girl from Brighton died after her car was hit by a train at 1 a.m. Saturday.

Lydia Johnson was driving northbound on Iris Street at the intersection with the BNSF Railroad crossing in Mt. Pleasant when she attempted to drive around the railroad crossing gates. Her vehicle was struck broadside by a westbound train.

The gates were down and the lights were flashing to indicate an approaching train.

Johnson was transported by MedForce to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

The collision remains under investigation.
