Fairfield senior standout Nicole Buch signed her national letter of intent with Missouri Southern State University Wednesday.
The Lions are located in Joplin, Missouri, and compete in the MIAA conference where Buch will join the team for the 2018-19 season.
During her junior year, the 5-foot-8 point guard was a 4A all-state selection, gained her second consecutive SEC player of the year award, and led the conference in scoring and assists for the second straight season.
Buch has amassed 1,010 points in her career, and needs 382 points this season to become the all-time leading scorer in Fairfield girls? basketball history by passing Amy Breen?s career mark of 1,391.
Q) How did you feel this morning, now that you are signing?
A) It was pretty exciting. I know a lot of my AAU friends have been waiting for this day too.
Q) What?s next?
A) Basketball season is here so for me it?s go time, it?s a long season and there is a lot a head of us, but I think it?s going to be a good year and I can?t wait.
Q) Have you thought about the scoring record and what are your goals for the year?
A) Almost everyone knows about it so people like to remind me, but I try not to think about it a lot. I know my family and friends and people in the community are pushing for me to get and it is a goal in mind but it?s not what I?m really focusing on. I try to think more about the team and try to get into game mode.
Q) You?re the youngest of six siblings, talk about maintaining the family legacy.
A)I look up to all of my siblings and they are a huge part of who I am. They are so helpful and offer to go to the gym with me and come to all of my games. I literally could not ask for a better family. I just want to make them proud.

Q) Explain the importance of having players like Buch sign and move on to the next level.
A) It?s always exciting for the younger girls to see somebody go on and play and maybe they might develop some hopes and dreams to follow in her footsteps. We haven?t had anyone go on to the play in college for a few years, so again, it?s good to have the girls see that.
Q) Buch needs to raise her average to break the record. Is there any in-game strategy used to help that?
A) Scoring wise, Nicole creates her own opportunites by rebounding and slashing and using dribble penetration. She?s one of the best in our league, so Nicole will get hers. I know she?s not really thinking of the number, but it?ll be the cherry on top of an amazing career if she does get that.
