Cardinal girls? basketball has a rival in New London after repaying the Tigers for a 49-40 Dec. 12 loss, with a 47-40 road victory Tuesday night that snapped a 10-game SEISC losing streak.
What makes this so special is that the Tigers only have one win on the season and it was on that cold December night in Eldon versus Cardinal, and the Comets have had many competitive games, but Head Coach Jacob Blumer and his squad were just 1-14 going into the game.
The game was tied at 21 at intermission and Coach Blumer reminded his girls that considering they were in foul trouble during the first half, the Comets were sitting pretty well off and it was their game to lose.
?We pressured them more in the second half and got some turnovers, which led to easy scores for us,? said Blumer. He added, ?We were patient on offense and it led to open shots, yet we were aggressive when we had the right opportunities.?
5?6 freshman Alexia McClure led all scorers with 19 points, while her 5?10 sophomore sidekick Maddie Cloke added a dozen points herself.
Sophomores Rachel Lewman and Lydia Moses also scored for the Comets with eight and five points, respectively.
Blumer finished his comments with, ?Overall, just a great game by the girls.?
He and his team will host 7-9 Notre Dame-Burlington Friday, a team Cardinal lost to 68-31 back on Dec. 15.
Tipoff will be 6 p.m.
