Cora Louise Gates, 94, of Keosauqua, Iowa and formerly of rural Birmingham passed away on January 20, 2018 at Keosauqua Health Care Center in Keosauqua. She was born on December 13, 1923 to Neal and Maggie Leyden Huisman in Prairie City, Iowa. Cora attended country schools and graduated from Birmingham High School. She married Clarence ?Bud? Gates in 1945. He preceded her in death on July 31, 2001.
Together Bud and Cora raised two children on the family farm. She was a housewife and assisted with the farm chores, including driving a tractor and operating farm machinery. She was a member of the Oak Grove Ladies Aid. Cora enjoyed quilting, making candles and ceramics.
She is survived by a son, Steven (Patricia) Gates of Birmingham, Iowa; a daughter, Shirley (Roger) Kirchner of Keosauqua, Iowa; two grandchildren, Terry (Jamie) Gates of Birmingham, Iowa, David (Sarah) Gates of San Diego, California; and three great-grandchildren, Amelia, Calen and Toby Clarence.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; parents; a brother, Aaron Huisman; and a sister, Marie Laughlin.
Graveside services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 25, 2018 at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery east of Douds, Iowa. Burial will immediately follow the service. Online condolences may be directed to www.pedrickfuneralhome.com.
