Depth key for Cardinal boys? track and field

The Cardinal boys? track season is underway and Head Coach Jerald Harter has three seniors, five juniors, 10 sophomores and five freshman filling out his 23-man roster.

Harter admits that depth will be a key factor since the Comets do not possess it, but he?s optimistic about who they do have.

?Our hurdle races should be a strength, along with high jump and long jump expected to be improved,? said Harter. ?I feel our sprints will be stronger then last year as well.?

50/50 mix

Nearly half, 11 of 23 members, of the squad are returning letter-winners including three throwers.

Leadership Harter plans to lean on includes seniors Wyatt Gatton and Mason Aschenbrenner and juniors Trey Albert and Dagisteno Shilling.

As far as team goals, they?re sticking with the usual gameplan: Qualify as many events as possible for the state track meet.

One individual goal is held by senior high hurdler Aschenbrenner, who is working towards a berth in the Drake Relays with the top 32 in the state qualifying.

Thursday Aschenbrenner recorded the quickest heat of the season in Class 1A in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.73, while Gatton has the fifth fastest time in Class 1A with 16.30.
