Eckley rushes for 304 in Pekin win

Pekin absolutely dominated Sigourney in every way Friday night en route to a 31-12 road win in the team?s season opener.

The scoring began with a 35-yard Levi Rohr field goal to give the Panthers an early 3-0 first quarter lead. Rohr ended the night with seven points after adding four successful PATs.

The Cobras actually took a short-lived lead when JD Stout scored on a six-yard run for the first points of the second quarter, giving Sigourney a 6-3 advantage after Payton Schauf missed the extra point.

Pekin responded with an 86-yard Dayne Eckley run that, followed by a Rohr point after, gave the Panthers a 10-6 leading heading into the half.

Big second half

Panther junior Dayne Eckley found the Sigourney endzone two more times in the third quarter of play, first breaking free for a 69-yard scamper before hammering the nail in the Cobra coffin with a three-yard touchdown that made it 24-6 entering the fourth after Rohr added the kick.

Don?t call it

a comeback ...

Because it wasn?t happening for Sigourney, although Zech Boender did return a punt for a touchdown that made it 24-12, and briefly gave the Cobras some hope in their home/season opener.

Senior quarterback Caleb Comstock crossed the goal line from 10 yards out for the final score of the contest, giving him -2 yards rushing after taking a 12 yard loss on a sack earlier in the game. Comstock definitely had a positive yardage total after completing four of six passes for 81 yards with a long of 34.

Eckley did have a fumble on one of his 27 attempts, however, he more than made up for it by rushing for 304 yards and three scores.

Zach Hammes also had eigh carries for 54 yards out of the Panther backfield with a long rush of 15 yards, along with a five-yard reception as well.

Lathe Crocket also had one reception while Connor Reed had two.
