The great thing for Fairfield?s 11-8 boys?s basketball team is that regardless of what happens this Friday at Fort Madison or next Tuesday at Knoxville, the Trojans know their playoff path and it?s ?very fair,? according to Head Coach Mick Flattery.
As the No. 3 seed in their eight team region that also features Fort Madison, Iowa City Liberty, Keokuk, Mt. Pleasant, Solon, Washington and West Liberty, the Trojans will be favored in their first game versus No. 6 Washington and then a slight underdog against No. 2 seed Solon if Fairfield can get a third win over their SEC rivals from Washington. The Trojans have defeated the Demons 60-51 on the road Dec. 8, and 69-58 at home Jan. 19.
The third matchup is scheduled to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. in Solon with the Spartans and Keokuk following around 8 p.m., but the state is looking into shifting the starts to 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The two winners will then meet on Thursday Feb. 22 at 8 p.m. in Solon.
?Mt. Pleasant earned the No. 1 seed,? said the Trojans skipper. ?We were close with Solon and Fort Madison.? added Flattery. ?We beat Fort Madison head-to-head so we trumped them, but Solon had two wins on us, so us as the No. 3 seed was fair.?
On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 Mt. Pleasant will host No. 8 West Liberty, followed by No. 4 Fort Madison vs No. 5 Iowa City Liberty at the Panthers gym.
As the Trojans wrap their regular season next week, Flattery knows his team can?t take look past the Demons to a possible second-round matchup with the Spartans.
?Playing Washington is never easy, and they?re coming off of a great ?rivalry? win over Mid-Prairie. They?ve dealt with some changes in their roster this season, so defeating Mid-Prairie was a good win for them.?
