Fairfield FAA attends State Convention

On April 22, the Fairfield FFA chapter left the high school in the evening to go to Ames. Iowa State University was their destination for their State Convention. All members that attended were all participating in a contest. The chapter took 10 members to the convention.

When they arrived at Iowa State University that day, they went straight to Hilton Coliseum to set up their Chapter Display where it would be judged the next morning. A chapter display shows one event the chapter put together. The Fairfield FFA chose to do their display on the Take Away Hunger food packaging event they held in March. The display had to show the purpose and value of the event and what was learned from putting it on. Hannah Clubb, Sophia Mineart, Hollie Nelson, Kaitlin Post, and Jenna Wickenkamp created the Chapter Display, and they received a Gold rating for all of their hard work.

The next day, April 23, members spent their time at the career show, where they got to walk around and talk with FFA members from other chapters and participate in displays from colleges and agricultural companies. Members also had the opportunity to watch a few different contests including Ag Sales and Parliamentary Procedure. Hollie Nelson and Stetson Spees served as delegates to help choose the next state FFA officers.

Later in the day, all the members went on a tour to see the Iowa State University Dairy Farm. This is where members got to watch the cows during milking time and got to go through most of the barns. After the tour of the Dairy Farm, members attended the first general session. In this session members listened to the keynote speaker Mandy Harvey who is a deaf singer. When the session was over, members went to a barbecue put on by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. It was a very busy day for the Fairfield FFA chapter.

April 24, was filled with many things to do and see. Members Blake Metz, Sophia Mineart, Kaitlyn Post, and Cohyn Roach participated as a team in the Ag Sales CDE. They received a Silver rating. The Poultry Judging team, consisting of Austin Adkison, Daniel Baldosier, Hollie Nelson, and Steston Spees, received a Gold 16th place, with Nelson receiving 23rd place individual. After all contests were done, members attend all the final session where they heard from the Iowa FFA officers, Gov. Kim Reynolds and Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg speak.

It was then time to go home after an exciting trip to state convention. The Fairfield FFA is proud of all it?s members participating in contest and all doing very well. They thank Shawn Nelson, parent, for chaperoning. They all had a great time and plan to do even better next year.
