The 23-8 Fairfield volleyball team will host 3-20 Keokuk in the first round of the Class 4A Region 7 bracket tonight at 7 p.m.
Head Coach Diana Drish didn?t seem to have any tricks up her sleeves as her well-oiled machine started practice Tuesday night with simple drills, before focusing on their offensive and defensive sets.
?We need to be ready for the unexpected,? said Drish. ?And we need to be more aggressive ourselves.
Drish also brought up an unexpected point when I asked her to remind everyone why it?s important to have fans in the stands, especially during the playoffs.
?No matter who we are going to play, having support is huge for the girls,? said the coach. ?It will also boost our numbers inside our gym, and that allows us to keep hosting.?
?We have a great facility here and we seem to draw in a great crowd,? Drish continued. ?That in turn gets us those first round site selections when the state makes their picks.?
If the Trojans are able to defeat the Chiefs, they will advance to play at No. 14 Fort Madison Tuesday Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. Coach Drish confessed that if they face Fort Madison, she likes the Trojans chances.
?We are both good teams,? admitted the coach. ?But we haven?t been able to get a set away from them this year. It?s really hard to beat a team three times. This is our third chance and we?re ready.?
Barring an enormous upset on the other half of the Region 7 bracket by either Washington or Mt. Pleasant, the Fairfield/Fort Madison winner would travel to Cedar Rapids to face No. 1 Xavier on Monday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.
