Fairfield High School and Maharishi School have been recognized as a few of the best public and private schools in Iowa, respectively.
According to a website that ranks schools, niche.com, FHS ranked 20 out of 293 eligible public schools in Iowa for college preparation. The ranking is based on how many students are enrolled in advanced placement classes, their SAT and ACT scores, and the quality of the colleges they attend. Assistant principal Tim Bartels said FHS students look into Ivy League schools every year and many of them are admitted. This all began when school board member Christi Welsh was at an away basketball game when she noticed the school had a banner celebrating its academic rankings according to niche.com. She asked Bartels if Fairfield ranked highly in any academic category, and wondered if it should have a banner, too. Bartels searched the website and found out about Fairfield?s high ranking for college preparation.
?The reason it stood out is that it shows a 3A district can offer 4A and 5A opportunities,? he said. ?It was pretty cool to see that. I contacted Niche and told them I noticed we were ranked No. 20, and they sent us a banner.?
The banner was hung in the Administration/Technology/Curriculum Office during Monday?s school board meeting so all board members could see it. Bartels said it will be moved to the high school commons.
Maharishi School ranked highly in several categories according to the website. Niche.com ranked it the No. 2 out of 46 most diverse private high school in Iowa, No. 2 of 19 best private K-12 schools and No. 3 of 33 best private high schools. It has a teacher to student ratio of eight-to-one. Fairfield?s ratio is 14-to-1, and Niche lists the national average at 16-to-1.
Maharishi School?s overall Niche grade is A-plus, and Fairfield?s is A-minus.
