Humanities Iowa speaker to give ?obituary? program at Dover Museum

NEW LONDON ? Dover Museum in New London will host Humanities Iowa speaker Mary Kay Shanley of Des Moines at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 19.

Shanley is a best-selling author and speaker whose program is titled, ?The Obituary ? Yours or Someone Else?s.?

Obituaries were published in America as early as the 16th century, but those were generally of the aristocracy. Later, newspaper obits began appearing with regularity for soldiers, public servants, adventurers, and celebrities telling of their lives as well as their deaths.

In the late 1900s, ?common man? obituaries became routine. They could be written by a family member or the deceased before death. Some are very short, and readers wish for more, while others are a bit lengthy.

Shanley will tell the two things people should know about obituaries: What we may think is insignificant could be very important to others.

A mini workshop follows the presentation.

The program is free. Refreshments will follow.
