A man held at the Wapello County Jail escaped custody while receiving medical treatment, but was apprehended two days later in Missouri.
Nelson Mendoza, 31, of Iowa and California, was receiving medical treatment at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center early Sunday morning when he escaped custody. Mendoza had been held in the Wapello County Jail for willful injury, assault, interference with official acts and possessing contraband in a correctional facility.
Mendoza was seen north of the Ottumwa Regional Health Center when he entered a wooded area and authorities lost contact with him.
At 3 p.m. Tuesday, Mendoza was apprehended in Adair County, Missouri, with an unidentified female. Further charges are pending.
