A motorist led officers on a high-speed chase Wednesday that began in Fairfield and continued into Wapello County.
At 12:23 a.m., a Fairfield police officer attempted to stop a vehicle traveling without headlights. The driver refused to stop and led officers on a high-speed pursuit into Wapello County. The Fairfield Police Department was joined by the Jefferson County Sheriff?s Office and Iowa State Patrol.
Law enforcement officers laid down a spike strip in Ottumwa in an attempt to puncture the vehicle?s tires. Fairfield Police Capt. Colin Smith said the vehicle drove over the strip, but was still able to elude police. Officers lost contact with the vehicle on the south side of Ottumwa.
The vehicle was a rented Nissan Rogue. Smith said law enforcement officers are still investigating who is on the rental agreement and whether they played a role in Wednesday morning?s chase.
