The Pekin girls? basketball team had their 18-game winning streak snapped Friday at home, 38-30, in the SEISC shootout versus 20-1 Central Lee, the No. 1 team in the conferences? south division.
Head Coach Davis Eidahls? squad ran even with the Hawks for the first eight minutes, and even took a 17-15 edge into the locker room, but Central Lee outscored the Panthers 10-5 in the third period, and 13-8 in the fourth quarter to win the SEISC conference shootout between division champions by eight points.
Central Lee only goes six girls deep and four of them had between eight and 10 points while shooting just 26 percent from the field and 23 percent from the perimeter. The difference was that while the Panthers shot 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from distance, Pekin only attemped five free throws although they did make four of them. Central Lee went 17-24 from the charity stripe for 71 percent.
Four north division kids were in foul trouble, including junior Haley Gambell who led the Pekin offense with nine points before fouling out. Faith Oostra also fouled out after accumulating six points and five rules infractions.
Maci Gambell managed six points and five rebounds while receiving four audible reprimands via whistle. Senior Whitney Johnson joined the six point scorers with two long-balls for her stat line.
