The Maharishi School tennis team performed well last week following their win over Fairfield, defeating Southeast Conference member Keokuk 8-1 Thursday at the Punj Tennis Center before finishing third in the eight-team, Pella Invitational.
?Top to bottom, the team played well,? said Head Coach Steve Briggs about Thursday?s play. ?We?re still figuring out our doubles pairings, but overall, the coaches were pleased with the match, and the weather.?
The Pioneers took a 6-0 lead into the doubles action with Kai Vessey, Devan Burke, Daniel Zhu, Bhavani Allison, Karthik Vempati and Frank Li Wang all winning in straight sets while collectively losing only 19 games during those 12 sets.
Vessey and Burke combined for a 6-2, 6-0 victory to accompany a 6-2, 6-1 conquest by Li Wang and Vempati. Unfortunately, Zhu and Allison were on the wrong end of a 7-6, 6-3 defeat to the Chiefs in the Pioneers lone loss.
The Maharishi School finished third in Pella behind the host Little Dutch and Boone.
Kai Vessey and Devan Burke won the doubles tournament while getting some retribution for their teammates with victories over both the Dutch and Toreadors. Boone and Pella in the process. Vessey and Burke fell behind 3-6 in the final match before recovering to score a 9-7 victory.
Their final win came over Boone?s top pair that finished fifth in the state last season.
?I wasn?t sure Kai and Devan were going to kick things into gear in time to pull off the win,? said Briggs. ?They were a bit sluggish at the outset, but after falling behind, they ran off six of the last seven games.
In singles competition, Daniel Zhu finished 5th place with a 2-1 record while Bhavani Allison went 2-2, finishing 8th.
The Pioneers team will travel to Burlington today for a dual meet.
