Plans for hosting The Wall That Heals, the traveling Vietnam Memorial replica, are progressing.
A committee of American Legion Auxiliary No. 47 and others interested in the project have been meeting monthly at the VFW Hall for planning the event for Sept. 13-16 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. The group will meet weekly in August.
Roger Frakes is coordinating volunteers and information for the motorcycle escort from Burlington. Frakes has been involved with many hostings of The Wall That Heals. His brother, Jerry, is one of seven from Fairfield and over 50 others from nearby communities listed on The Wall for giving their life during the Vietnam War or as the result of injuries received during that war.
Anyone wishing to volunteer can contact Frakes at 319-695-3140.
Mary Andersen is communicating with area schools and businesses for brochures, programs, T-shirts and other print needs.
Joyce Countryman, Floyd West and Linda Hendricks are assisting with mailings, and Charles Ruby assisted in the earlier planning.
Shirley Kitch is treasurer for the event, and Darlene Vorhies has been coordinating details with Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund that provides The Wall for display. Gene Stine was responsible for making many contacts locally, resulting in raising much of the $8,000 needed to host The Wall.
Gini Hughes, from SunnyBrook Assisted Living, will make contact about golf carts and assist as needed, and John Miller with RSVP through United Way, will assist in recruiting volunteers.
