The Fairfield freshman boys? basketball squad played back-to-back games this week, first hosting Albia at the Cambridge Sports Plex on Monday and then traveling to Centerville for another non-SEC matchup Tuesday.
The Trojans had a difficult start with Albia, allowing the Blue Demons to build an 8-0 head start and a 24-4 lead after just one quarter of play.
Fairfield responded with a 20-7 scoring advantage in the second period, to cut the halftime deficit to 31-24 and ?make a game of it,? according to coach Glenn Perkins.
The Trojans continued to battle back in the third frame, getting the score to 37-34 midway through the quarter before Albia pulled away to take a 47-38 score into the fourth.
Late in the game, the Trojans did get it back to 56-51, however, the visiting team hit clutch free throws for a 60-51 final score.
Scoring totals were as follows: Ethan Waugh 17, Xavier Kapijimpanga 11, Nathan Whitney eight, Landen Schafer seven, Blake Holden five and Kyle Jeffrey three.
Tuesday went similar, but with the Trojans taking a road win home with them as they defeated Centerville 59-51.
The ninth-graders started agrresively and lead 12-5 after eight minutes. The Big Red returned the favor and outpaced the Trojans in the second 17-13, but a Landen Schafer steal and put back gave Fairfield a 25-22 halftime advantage.
Coach Perkins said the team played, ?solid? during the third quarter, outpacing Centerville 14-10 for a 39-32 lead heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw the scoring increase with Fairfield edging the home team 20-19 for the 59-51 victory.
