Trojan girls sputter, then speed away for win

Tuesday night in Knoxville went well for the Fairfield girls? varsity basketball team as they recorded their 16th win in 20 games with a 76-57 victory over the Panthers.


The night didn?t start off so hot for Head Coach Brian Witzenburg and the SEC champions. Fairfield led 12-11 after the opening eight minutes, but was outscored 19-10 in the second period, sending them to the locker room with an eight point deficit on the road to a team that was 15-3 going into the contest.


A 26-10 offensive outburst in the third quarter gave the Trojans a 48-40 advantage heading into the final frame. Another 28 points went on the board in the fourth for the No. 11 team in Class 4A, while they only surrendered 17 to the home town Panthers.


Stat lines for the girls were: Ashley Bloomquist seven points; Shaylin Drish 19 points, five rebounds and five steals; Nicole Buch 23 points and five assists; Malory Jones 12 points and 10 rebounds; Kara Jeffrey 12 points and eight rebounds; and Destiny Gridley three points.


The last regular season game of the year will be this Friday when the girls travel to SEC rival Fort Madison for a chance to reach 17 wins overall and secure a 7-1 record in the conference with a victory.
