Trojan junior Bloomquist sets Falcon Relays record in 3000 meters

Tuesday night at West Burlington, the Trojans girls? track team ran in the Falcon Relays finishing sixth in the Class A division with 47 points, although the team was missing a lot of members due to spring break.

Junior Ashley Bloomquist followed her win in the 1500 meter run with a meet record as she finished first in the 3000 meter run as well with a time of 11:29.52.

Head Coach Jerrod Belzer spoke with The Ledger about Bloomquists? record and the team?s overall performance.

Tell us about Ashley?s record setting 3000 meter run.

Belzer: She?s been working pretty hard and she?s just in good shape right now. She had a good race and ran pretty strong. Really she didn?t have anyone to run with, she was just kind of pacing herself.

To not have any real competition and be out there by herself and still get the meet record was pretty cool. She provides a lot to this team right now, leadership on and off the track and she sets the tone for our whole distance crew, but especially the girls.

If she had someone pushing her, could that time have been even lower?

Belzer: Oh yeah. I would imagine if she had somebody to run with, it would have been probably another 10 seconds faster or so. It?s a tough race regardless, but to be out there running 3000 meters all by yourself ... yeah, there was a lot of time left out there but that?s OK.

Does she show that athletic aggression when she runs, the way we see when she?s playing basketball?

Belzer: She does. She?s a fairly quiet kid and is not one to do a lot of talking, but she?s definitely a competitor. She likes running and she likes to run well and to compete. She likes those statement races where she can go out and run with good competition and prove how good she is.

Who else had highlights from the meet?

Belzer: Malory Jones really stood out, she had a great night of jumping. She cleared 5?3 last night, so it was good to see her jumping well early in the season and in cold weather. That was a good mark for her last night. We saw a lot of freshman and sophomores step up and have good first outdoor meets.

Does it take time for the runners to adjust from indoor to outdoor meets?

Belzer: Yeah it does, the freshmen especially. This is their first high school competition and it?s a whole new ballgame from running at middle school meets last year and then you add the cold and all of those other factors. For them to go out and run well, that?s good for me to see. As far as the team goes, we?re on spring break during this first week of outdoor meets and we?re missing a lot kids but we?re excited. We come back next Tuesday and run at home with a full squad. I?m excited to put a full squad out there and see what we have because we?ll have some pretty good competition here next Tuesday.

Are you still chasing anyone in the Southeast Conference?

Belzer: We have to give Mt. Pleasant credit, they?re kind of at the head of the conference right now and until somebody beats them, that?s who you have to think that you?re chasing. They?ve got another good team this year, so that?s who we?re looking at.

Washington is going to have a good team, Keokuk is much improved and will have some good runners. They may not have the depth that other teams have, but they have some good individuals that will put up a bunch of points.

Fort Madison is always going to have good distance runners, so a small conference, but lots of competition for us. Are we sitting in the two spot right now? That?s what I?d like to think but we?ll learn a lot here in the next week when we start putting a full squad together against the rest of our conference.
