Trojan sweep keeps SEC hopes alive

The Fairfield softball team swept the Panthers Monday night at Mt. Pleasant 1-0 and 9-8 to eliminate their rivals from contention in the Southeast Conference race that will now be decided tonight when the 8-6 Trojans host 9-5 Keokuk while Washington, who is also 8-6 in the SEC, will travel to last-place Fort Madison for a doubleheader.

Game one

?She?s probably the best pitcher in the conference,? hailed Mt. Pleasant head coach Troy Mears after sophomore Allison Rebling threw a complete game one-hit shutout while walking just two batters and striking out eleven.

?That rise ball is just so hard to lay off of,? admitted the coach as he continued, ?I think we?re getting better. We probably still struck out a lot, but we?re seeing it a lot more.?

As for the offense, the Trojans collected five hits, with Lily Hoskins responsible for three of them including a single in the fifth that led to Ashtyn Drish scoring from second on an errant throw to third, giving Fairfield the go-ahead run and decisive 1-0 lead.

The other hit came from Carly Ferrel who went 1-2 and Shay Drish was the sixth baserunner after drawing a walk.

Game two

The scoring started with a two-run Ashtyn Drish double in the top of the second that gave the Trojans the lead until Mt. Pleasant exploded for all eight of their runs in the fourth inning.

Fairfield answered with a run in the fifth and then five more in the sixth to tie it at 8-8, including a three-run double by Hannah Simpson.

The game winning run scored when Ashtyn reached on an error in the eighth and then scored after Simpson singled and then Hoskins hit her home with the decisive RBI in the 9-8 victory.

Ashtyn went 3 1/3 in the circle and allowed eight runs on four hits and four walks with one strikeout.

Rebling came in and stopped the bleeding in three innings of relief and allowed four hits and two walks while striking out five.

Freshman Bailey Hird ended the game as the Trojans pitcher after 1 2/3 innings during her appearance. She allowed two hits and surrendered zero runs.

?It?s good for our kids to get both wins, explained head coach Bob Bradfield. ?They played hard all year and they could have given up in that second game when we got down 8-2. Mt. Pleasant had that one big-inning to get the lead and we had that great inning to tie it up. It?s great for us to get a win. We?ve lost a lot of one run games this year.?

Along with three RBI, Hannah Simpson had three hits to lead the team while Ashtyn Drish also had multiple hits and three RBI.

Now the Trojans host Keokuk tonight with a chance to do something special on Senior Night, ?They understand that we have a chance to win conference,? said Bradfield. ?We let them know and then just hope they come out and play their best and send the seniors out on a regular season high note.?
