Van Buren, Cardinal enter final week

Class A-District 6

The Cardinal community celebrated homecoming Friday.

Junior Trey Albert hit sophomore Jarrett Greiner for a five-yard pass to give the Comets their only touchdown in a 47-8 loss to Montezuma. Albert was 17-27 overall with 122 yards through the air. He also rushed five times for 17 yards on the ground. Kade Chance had one rush for -5 yards and was 0-1 passing, however, the junior will probably remember this game for 11 other reasons. 11 is the number of catches the standout athlete made while accumulating 92 receiving yards.

Up next for first-year coach Landon Miller and his Comets is a trip to 1-7 North Mahaska in the season finale. The Warhawks are fresh off their first victory of the season having just beat what?s left of Winfield Mt. Union 26-6. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in New Sharon.

Class 1A-District 4

Although Van Buren lost to Wilton 56-8 Friday night, the Warriors have an excellent chance to defeat Columbus this week.

Columbus is 2-6 on the year with both of their victories coming by two touchdowns against Winfield Mt. Union and Highland, respectively. Van Buren didn?t play W-MU this season, but they did beat Cardinal, who in turn beat Winfield. They also only loss to Highland by a point on the road, while Columbus must come to Keosauqua for Friday?s contest. Kickoff for head coach Mike Hurley?s squad is set for Friday at 7 p.m.
