Van Buren was going to have to knock off back-to-back ranked opponents on the road to make the 2017 state volleyball tournament as the Class 2A Region 8 representative. Sadly, they came up short but the Warriors gave it their all starting with No. 11 Iowa City Regina Thursday night.
The Regals and their six seniors improved to 27-8 with a 3-0 victory with game scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-18.
Van Buren finishes the season with a 20-11 overall record and will return 11 of their 14 players, losing seniors Hannah Heiserman, Lauren Starnes and Hannah Hudson.
Regina will now face No. 12 Wilton who is 34-5 and swept Mediapolis out of the playoffs. The regional final will be played at 7 p.m. Halloween night at West Liberty high school with the winner advancing to the state quarterfinals which begin Nov. 7.
