Warriors lose tough game

The Van Buren boys? basketball team suffered a tough 55-53 loss Tuesday night in Keosauqua to SEISC foe Central Lee.

The first half flip-flopped when the Hawks outscored the Warriors 20-9 in the first period, before Van Buren Head Coach Fred Parsons got his team settled in and returned the favor in the second, outpacing Central Lee 19-9, and cutting their double-digit deficit down to one, 29-28.

The two teams ran even in the third period, each scoring 15 points, setting up an intense final eight minutes for the home crowd.

Van Buren battled until the end, but was eventually outscored 11-10, leaving the final score 55-53.

The win improves Central Lee?s record to 5-2 in SEISC play with a non-conference trip to bigger, but probably not better Keokuk Thursday, before returning to conference action Friday at home versus WACO.

The loss drops the Warriors to 5-4, with 6-4 Danville the first of three straight conference road trips for Van Buren before they return to Keosauqua Friday Jan. 12 against New London.

Statistical leaders for the Warriors were junior Caleb Johnson who scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting, including 5-10 from behind the arc, and senior Jaeden Gerig who was second in scoring with 14 points, while leading his peers in rebounds with five.

Tipoff for Friday?s game at Danville will follow the conclusion of the girls? game.
