Audrey Smith and Sidney Frey were named outstanding 4-H members during the recent Van Buren County 4-H Awards Banquet.
Smith, a senior at Van Buren High School, is a member of the Horseshoe Bend 4-H Club and has been in 4-H for seven years. Projects carried include horticulture, vet science, family heritage, clothing selection, cat, child development, personal development, poultry, sheep, food and nutrition, goat, visual arts, sewing, and home improvement.
Smith has been active at the Van Buren County Fair, exhibited at the Southeast Iowa Showdown and the Iowa State Fair. She has participated in the meat goat skillathon, fair clean-up day, 4-H Halloween party, 4-H lock-in, 4-H awards night, and she has been a four-year member of the county youth council.
Smith has held numerous offices, including 4-H Club reporter, vice president, secretary, historian and treasurer. She also has held officer positions with the county youth council.
Smith has received numerous awards: outstanding junior, best food and nutrition (junior and intermediate), best Jr.+ intermediate sheep records, best overall junior feed records, best secretary book, best junior record book, best visual arts all three age groups, best family and consumer sciences (junior and intermediate), best senior poultry records, goat leadership, grand and reserve breeding doe, grand and reserve buck, reserve rate of gain, reserve egg show, and reserve overall poultry.
Smith also has been active in the American Boer Goat Association, and Junior American Boer Goat Association, Iowa Meat Goat Association, cross-country, track, quiz bowl, National Honor Society, FFA, wrestling cheerleader, youth leadership council, art club and science club.
Sidney Frey. a 2018 graduate of Van Buren High School, is a member of the Friendly Four Corners 4-H Club. She has been in 4-H for nine years. Projects carried include citizenship, environment + sustainability, horticulture, food and nutrition, child development, animal science, photography, home improvement, leadership, music, record keeping, self-determined, sewing and many more.
Frey has held many offices in her 4-H Club: secretary, treasurer, recreation, photographer, communication chair, grant writer and historian.
She also has been active in local and state activities including all club community service projects, fair clean-up day, club meetings, county youth council, Washington, D.C. trip, lock-in, Halloween party, county fair and state fair exhibitor
Frey’s awards include: achievements, best food and nutrition overall, best historian book, best senior record book, best treasurer book, best intermediate and senior home improvement, best senior record keeping, best senior visual arts, child development medal, club secretary book, family and consumer science all three age groups, food and nutrition medal, gardening and horticulture medal, historian’s book, leadership medal, NRCS conservation award, photography medal, SET intermediate, self-determined project medal, welding medal, and woodworking medal.
