The Broadway Players of FHS will bring Robert Fulghum’s “All I Really Need to Know I Learned In Kindergarten” to Fairfield High School and an Early Childhood Literacy Project to the Fairfield community on the last weekend of October.
“Kindergarten” is billed as a comedy/drama/musical based on the best-selling writings of Robert Fulghum. The show is a series of vignettes with a common theme: We all need to remember the lessons we learned in kindergarten to survive the hilarious, strange, enlightening, or challenging experiences of our daily adult lives: share, play nicely, take adventures, don’t yell at people, when life gets tough hold hands and stick together, and everybody is different — and that’s a great thing!
The cast is comprised of 15 actors, six of whom double as vocalists. Soloists are: Amber Burroughs, Dallas Carlson, Harper Fiske, Aven Gottshall, River Norwood, and Alyson Reid.
Other cast members are: Izzy Ferrell, Gerda Fiske, Sophia Fritz, Samara McLain, Mira Pappin, Kaylee Pringle, Nicole Sutherland, Wyatt Whitham, and Christina Winland.
Crew members include Abigail Ford, JJ Funkhouser, Blair Grunwald, Katie McLain, Claire Pettit, and Ella Phillips.
John Grunwald and Jim Edgeton volunteer as faculty tech supervisors. Fred Hucke rehearses with the vocalists. Betsie Wotherspoon is the director and Noel Wotherspoon is her assistant.
The public will have three opportunities to enjoy this funny and poignant theatre experience. The performances will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 26 and 27 and 2 p.m. Oct. 28 in the FHS Auditorium. One performance will be artistically and dramatically enhanced through sign language by school district superintendent Laurie Noll.
All tickets are $5 for general admission. Admission is free with an activities pass. Tickets will be available at the auditorium box office before each performance.
“All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” will be adjudicated by the Iowa High School Musical Theatre Awards. This organization promotes the education of students in all areas of theatre and celebrates the achievements of Iowa students in high school musical theatre.
The Broadway players cast and crew will participate in the community action portion of IHSMTA this fall. They will gather new and gently used books which interest kindergarten students. They also will collect cash donations to purchase books for the children in the community. Their goal is to give every Fairfield kindergarten student the opportunity to choose a book to own and take home. Donations of books or cash can be dropped off at the FHS office or at one of the performances. The stage managers will be in the lobby before and after the show to accept all donations. Those who contribute cash will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Extra books will be donated to Fairfield kindergarten class libraries.
Fulghum is the author of the original essays and stories. The script was created and adapted by Ernest Zulia. David Caldwell composed the music, lyrics, musical accompaniments and orchestration. “All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten” is produced by special arrangement with The Dramatic Publishing Company of Woodstock, Illinois.
