Fairfield’s Parent Teacher Organization gave the staff at Pence a nice surprise during Teacher Appreciation Week in May.

The PTO Teacher Appreciation Committee installed a countertop and new tables in the teachers’ break room. J.C. Huffman Cabinetry donated the countertop, and the sink for the bathroom just outside the lounge. Banks in town donated microwaves. Donors included Adela’s, Iowa State Bank, Libertyville Savings Bank and Miller Realty.

In late April, the PTO painted the lounge, and later decorated and staged the new furniture so it would be ready to unveil to the teachers in early May.

Kristin Miller, co-president of the PTO board, said remodeling the teachers’ lounge was the top priority among the teachers at Pence. Upon learning that, the PTO’s Teacher Appreciation Committee stepped in to do the job.

“It’s a nice feel-good project,” Miller said. “All the committee members were wonderful in giving their talents and time. This was definitely a group effort to put everything together so quickly.”
