Fire destroys house near Hedrick

A house near Hedrick was destroyed by fire Thursday.

The home belongs to Ryan and Lana Reed, who live at 17747 110th Ave., about 3 miles southwest of Hedrick. Hedrick Fire Chief Steve Copeland said people were in the house when he got the call about the fire at 4:40 p.m., but luckily, everyone was able to escape, and no injuries were reported. The house, however, was a total loss.

Copeland said his department called for backup as soon as it headed toward the fire, because they could see smoke from more than a mile away.

“The house was fully engulfed with the fire coming through the roof before we got there,” he said, adding that the wind accelerated the spread of the fire.

Firefighters were on scene for more than 10 hours, and just left at 3 a.m. today after extinguishing the last hot spots.

The fire was contained to the house and did not endanger any surrounding buildings, Copeland said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Responding to the scene were fire departments from Hedrick, Wapello Rural, Ottumwa, Sigourney, Fremont, Ollie and Richland.
