A hero is someone who puts others first. Someone that jumps at the opportunity to help others without hesitation, not for recognition but because it is the right thing to do. It is someone through their individual or collective actions make an extraordinary impact on someone’s life.
The Jefferson County Health Center Iowa Hospital Hero, Christine Engwall, truly exemplifies what a “Hospital Hero” is. She works as a registered nurse in the emergency department and she exhibits everything you envision when thinking about what a hero should be inside and outside hospital walls.
On a freezing cold Christmas Eve 2017, it was fate or the alignment of the stars that put Christine in the right place, at the right time. Due to unforeseen events, she and her family happened to take a different route to church when they came upon a car in the ditch with lights on.
She immediately investigated the situation to discover a passenger trapped in her car. Without hesitation, she stepped into action, breaking a window and strategically getting the victim out of a very dangerous situation. Once they helped the victim up the embankment to safety, it was moments later when the car was engulfed with flames.
In the emergency room, patients are Engwall’s priority. Those that she works with describe her as one of the most personable, welcoming, and caring individuals they have ever had the pleasure to meet.
Her warm, genuine smile greets everyone she encounters. She displays the highest standards of honesty and integrity. She is a very hardworking, humble, patient and dedicated nurse who is committed to providing the highest quality of care that is safe for all of her patients under her care.
She is also very active in the community, working closely with the 4-H children, providing education, fundraising, and volunteering on the 4-H Youth Committee. She dedicates many hours assisting to make the program strong, up-to-date, and focused on children.
Her selfless act of heroism is a display of dedication to excellence in her area of expertise beyond the scope of her day-to-day role as an emergency room nurse. Her commitment to the nursing profession and the community she serves is an inspiration to others in an effort to improve the quality of health care and save lives.
Engwall will be honored for her heroism during an awards ceremony Oct. 11 in Des Moines.
