OTTUMWA – A person was found dead Saturday morning at the scene of a house fire near Ottumwa.
At approximately 9:17 p.m. Saturday, the Wapello County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a house fire on 194th Avenue approximately 6 miles west of Ottumwa. Upon arrival of firefighters from Blakesburg and Wapello Rural Volunteer Fire Departments, a single family residential structure was found on fire.
A body of a deceased male subject was discovered at the scene by firefighters. The cause of death is unknown and the body has been transferred to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s Office in Ankeny where an autopsy will be performed.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by Wapello County Sheriff’s Office, Blakesburg Volunteer Fire Department, and are being assisted by Ottumwa Fire Department, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and Iowa State Fire Marshal’s Division.
