The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office reports the following:
7:55 p.m. — A 17-year-old from Fairfield was driving an orange Jeep Wrangler westbound on Salina Road near Pine Avenue. The vehicle left the roadway to the right, became airborne over a farm drive and landed nose-first in the ditch. The driver’s air bag deployed; the driver was not using a seat belt, and was partially ejected through the front windshield. The driver was transported by Midwest Ambulance to Jefferson County Health Center with suspected minor/non-incapacitating injuries. The vehicle was totaled, with repair/replacement cost estimated at $6,000. The driver was charged with failure to maintain control.
6:09 p.m. — Richard Sanford Palen, 44, of Ottumwa, was driving a green 2009 Volvo XC9 westbound on US Highway 34/163 east of Ash Avenue when it struck a deer in the roadway. Repair/replacement cost was estimated at $5,000.
