Three killed in train collision by Danville

DANVILLE – Three Burlington residents were killed Saturday when the car they were riding in was struck by a train near Danville.

Amber L. Curry, 29; Laura J. Burch, 27; and Anna N. Smith, 26, all of Burlington, were killed in the crash. The three were transported to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City by funeral home companies. Smith was wearing a seat belt. Curry and Burch were not.

According to a crash report from the Iowa State Patrol, the incident occurred at 11:31 a.m. that day on Old Highway 34 southeast of Danville. Curry was driving a 2017 Chevy Trax, with passengers Burch and Smith in the car as well.

As Curry was leaving a private residence, she failed to yield to an eastbound train at a private driveway crossing. The vehicle was struck in a broadside manner, rolled, and came to rest upright in the north ditch. No controls were present at the private crossing. The crash remains under investigation.
