Head Coach Jerrod Belzer and the Fairfield cross country teams recently planted a white oak tree with a commemorative stone near the sidewalk by B street at Water Works Park in honor of their teammate Darren Roberts who died earlier this year.
“Darren was a phenomenal teammate and kid and this was a way of honoring him and remembering him,” explained Belzer. “This is such a special place for these kids out here at this park and we wanted to put this up as a way to remember him. We hosted a 5K a couple weeks ago to raise money for that and we had way more support than we could have expected and a huge thank you to everyone who came out for that.”
Belzer also wanted to thank the groups that helped with the actual logistics of the project.
“Pam Craff and the parks department, Whitney Monuments and Oakwood Nursery helped us out so much and there assistance is much appreciated,” added the Trojan coach.
