The Fairfield girls basketball team hosted/defeated SEC rival Washington 62-48 Friday night in the FHS gymnasium.

No question

Right out of the gate, Fairfield jumped gained a 16-10 advantage after eight minutes thanks to 3-pointers from senior Ashley Bloomquist and junior Shay Drish, paired with a block by Class of 2020 standout Destiny Gridley on a 2-on-1 in favor of the Demons with 1:58 in the first.

Rain ball

When you are hot, you’re hot and current player of the week honoree Shay Drish hit three more 3-pointers in the second period to finish the first half with 12 points, all coming from the perimeter as Fairfield extended their lead to 34-23 at the break.

Gridley gets loud

Junior Destiny Gridley made some offensive noise in the third with a pair of 3-pointers during the first two minutes, stretching the Trojan advantage to 40-27 before ending the eight minutes with another 12-9 edge that left the score 52-36 headed to the fourth.

Closeout

Despite getting out scored 12-10 in the final period, Fairfield had long-since secured the conference win to improve to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the SEC.

Coach talk

“I was happy with our ball movement and that helped open the defense up,” explained head coach Brian Witzenburg. “Hitting shots was key for us. We’ve done a lot of shooting this week and we were 12-22 from 3-point range.”

“Malory Jones was 5-5 at one point in the first half and some night we are going to get both Kara and Malory going and we’re going to be dangerous then.”

“We’re not going to slow down with the way we are shooting. We like playing this way.”

“Defensively, it was huge to stick to our scouting report, we only gave up one shot that I didn’t like.”

Shay Drish led all scorers with 21 points on 7-10 shooting, including 6-8 from deep. The junior also had three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Malory Jones had a big night, scoring 15 points on 7-9 shooting while grabbing six rebounds, two steals, a block and an assist. Ashley Bloomquist was also in double-digits, scoring 12 points to go with four rebounds, six assists and two steals. Destiny Gridley added nine points, five rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist. Kara Jeffrey had three points and Rachel Thomas added two.

Fairfield travels to Pella Tuesday before hosting Iowa City Liberty on Saturday.
